A young man and woman they first met as small children, when their mother was murdered, have turned up in the village. That old case is the one that first brought Gamache and Beauvoir together, and neither of them knows why the two have come back now.

Then a 160-year-old letter from a stonemason surfaces. In it he describes his dread as he bricked up an attic room somewhere in the village. The villagers find the room and open it, and inside is a strange collection full of puzzles and hidden messages. Gamache starts to suspect that unsealing it has let an old enemy back into his life and into his home.
