Nora Pennington runs Miracle Books in Miracle Springs, North Carolina, and people in town talk about her window displays. For Halloween she fills the window with fictional heroines, Roald Dahl’s Matilda and Madeline Miller’s Circe among them. A local group objects to the magic in the display, and soon former friends and customers turn on Nora and on Celeste, a newcomer who has just opened a shop.
Then someone dies. The death is ruled an accident, but an old book page covered in strange symbols appears under Nora’s doormat, and she and the other members of the Secret, Book, and Scone Society start reading the clues. Celeste’s past turns out to matter more than anyone guessed.
